Boulder Orchard House

This remodeled home, completed in 2011 for the owner of a Boulder landscape design firm and his family, is a full renovation and addition. The existing home was  a small stone-clad house on a .43 acre lot, offering room to expand and lots of land for gardens.

The new, open design increased the area from 2000 to 3400 s.f.. The original main floor connects the new living, kitchen, dining and family rooms. A new stairway wraps the fireplace chimney to access the master suite above and the family room and basement below. The site has excellent southern exposure for passive solar. New large windows were added to welcome the sun and capture views of the mountains.

Wood harvested from the owners’ mountain property was used in window trim and cabinetry. An earthen floor in the family room “grounds” the design, and a small tree for a towel rack in the master bath completes the connection to nature. The entire site was landscaped by the owner using permaculture principles.
